Inbetweeners receive backlash from the City of Lincoln
There was an outpouring of anger and laughter on Monday night when TVs the Inbetweeners insulted the City of Lincoln and the University of Lincoln directly. The show described Lincoln as a “S**thole” and slated the University stating “goodbye first rate education, hello University of Lincoln”. Minutes after the words were said Facebook and Twitter saw a torrent of mixed emotions. Some found it funny, some were upset, and some were just plain angry.
Emily West, a Journalism graduate from the University said “It’s embarrassing, there are far worse Universities out there, Lincoln is up and coming and that’s why it hasn’t got the most amazing reputation”. Already there is a Facebook group referring to the specific quote which has six-thousand members and counting. Again not all of it is hatred to the show. In fact the group creator states “we love Lincoln!”. Jonathan Stone, a Media Production graduate was one of the ones to see the funny side. “I thought it was rather hilarious and I am baffled by the amount of people offended. Get a sense of humour and some perspective. Golf Studies used to be a degree taught”.
Lucy Tant who graduated 2 years ago did not see the funny side however saying “it’s not so funny when the credibility of 3 yrs hard work is ruined in 20 seconds”. What they said in the show statistically couldn’t be further from the truth. The University was actually the highest climber in this years Times good University guide and is ranked 62nd out of the 154 institutions in the UK.
One of the writers of the Inbetweeners , told the University “We don’t mean it, lovely uni” Surprisingly he was a former student from the University so maybe the quote was said in jest as an inside joke, but the popular comedy show has certainly ruffled a few feathers down Lincoln way. Kevin Scheepers, a BSC. Computing graduate aired his opinion on the matter simply stating “goodbye first rate comedy, hello Inbetweeners” and one has to wonder how Greg Davies (the actor who made the comment) will be received when he comes to Lincoln as part of his stand up comedy tour in November.
