In summary timing is everything!
This is an odd one for me. Don’t get me wrong Harvester is probably my favourite and most frequent place to eat out in Lincoln. It’s cheap, friendly, and has a good menu - so far so good. Offering a selection of grilled meats and sides, Harvester opened up when Scream closed its doors last year. The issue I have comes up when business is at its peak. The quality of food drops tenfold. The chips come out tasting like they’ve been left on a hot plate for several hours in an effort to keep them warm and the meat is usually over cooked. Case in point my friend ordered a steak and unlike me considered the busy restaurant rush factor and the assumption his meat would in fact be over done. He therefore ordered a rare steak and hey presto he got his steak medium just the way he likes it! The fact that he knew to do this shows that Harvester just can’t seem to cope when it gets busy.
All of these issues I’d quite possibly be willing to overlook but Harvester have committed a cardinal sin in my eyes – the salad bar was under stocked. Let me put this in to perspective the reason I first went to a Harvester restaurant was the fact that my friends told me how good this salad cart was and when I went I wasn’t disappointed. You’re usual salad cart has a selection of vegetables, some pasta, warm bread rolls, and a selection of sauces but when you go for your salad cart and half the ingredients are missing it’s just not a Harvester any more.
With all this criticism you really would think I hate the place, but I don’t. Go to Harvester when it’s quiet and it’ll probably be the best meal you eat all week. The service too is excellent; we are always served promptly and with little fuss. It’s just that kitchen seems to be understaffed at peak hours. As I say when it’s quiet the food is really well done. Harvester burger; five stars, I’d also recommend the ribs and chicken combo – again only if it’s quiet.
The feel of the place too is another positive. Most Harvester restaurants have been open since the early 90’s and the décor usually resembles that but with the advantage of the opening in 2010 Lincoln Harvester has a very vibrant feel to it that you just don’t get with other Harvesters.
So yes go to Harvester it really is one of the best value for money restaurants in Lincoln and there will be something on the menu for everyone but for the love of god just don’t do it between the hours of 12-2 and 5-8 or you WILL be disappointed.
