The Collection Museum

The Collection Museum sits just off Lincoln’s Steep Hill, where the old fashioned cobbles turn into the shiny marble of new buildings. The Collection looks like the latter, set in a beautifully modern building, but filled with the history of Lincoln.

There is an interesting mixture of hands-on activities and information to read to keep both kids and adults happy. Artifacts from Lincolnshire ranging from the Stone Age to the Medieval era are on display, and visitors can try on exact replicas of helmets and body armor from different centuries.

At The Collection, there is also the Usher Gallery, which hosts art exhibitions by new and established artists. Currently (until May 3rd) is an exhibition by British artist Phil Collins, with an array of photographic images, and a two screen video installation projected on the walls of the gallery, called ‘they shoot horses’. The video installation shows ‘a disco dance marathon produced in Ramallah with a group of young Palestinians’ (http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/thecollection)

The combination of loud dance music from Phil Collins’ exhibition, and the historical Viking artifacts may seem bizarre. However, this is what transforms The Collection from a dusty old museum, to a bustling center of culture.

Admission to The Collection is free, and a variety of activities for children are also held during school holidays. The Collection is well worth a visit!
