Cafe Portico at The Terrace
Monday, 3rd October 2011
Lincolnista attended the Showroom Professional Forum which was generously hosted by Cafe Portico and its new proprietor Sim. So is this a hidden gem of Lincoln or a cafe that needs to be hidden?
Fresh food, great coffee and homemade cakes certainly sounds like Cafe Portico has all the right ingredients for a fantastic little eatery but does it live up to expectations?
Upon arriving we realised there was a lot more to Cafe Portico than just coffee and cakes, indeed after 5pm they dim down the lights and turn cafe into wine bar with a great atmosphere and relaxed feel. Serving a range of wines, beers and spirits as well as sumptuous platters of cheese and cured meats.
Located in the corner of The Terrace (which is a multi-storey office complex bringing together numerous businesses mainly from creative backgrounds such as web-designers, illustrators, PR agencies and media companies) just off Grantham Street in the centre of Lincoln, Cafe Portico isn’t on the main straight but is well placed for both shoppers with tired feet as well as workers finishing for the day and wanting a chilled glass of vino!
Summing up Cafe Portico then, it is definitely one of the best places in Lincoln for fresh food cooked with passion which is sadly lacking from so many venues in Lincoln that rely on microwaves to provide ‘fast food’ rather than good food. The range of drinks both hot, cold and alcoholic and particularly the range of bottled ales is excellent. Pricing is very fair and certainly not ambitious for the quality of food on offer. Our one gripe? No access to wi-fi, which will rule out Cafe Portico for those business meetings but sometimes it’s rather refreshing to go somewhere where business doesn’t come first.
As far as Lincolnista is concerned and everyone we spoke to at the Professional Forum, Cafe Portico is definitely a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered!
