Local Music: I Know A Ghost

I Know A Ghost LincolnWell here at Lincolnista we promise to bring you details of every single kind of music and I think that we really have brought you something different this time…

I Know A Ghost refer to their style as ‘metalcore’  and for those of you who haven’t heard it before you can most probably paint a mental image of what you would be hearing in your head and you might need a couple of Asprin afterwards!

Lincolnista sat down with guitarist and vocalist for the band Simon Pritchard, who also has his own musical side project which he calls ‘Fleets’. “I Know a Ghost is for your angry days and Fleets is an acoustic more mellow side of me coming out – my nicer days. Fleets has only been around for around a month and it’s just me. Like Alexisonfire and Dallas Greens City in Colour side project, it was kind of inspired from there”. I know a Ghost and Fleets styles really couldn’t be any more different. Fleets has only a single song so far and it is very chilled and relaxed whilst any of I Know a Ghosts repertoire is much more for the listener who maybe likes to have a bit of a head bang.

In the relatively short time that they’ve been around I Know a Ghost has garnered a good sized following locally and internationally and Simon seemed rather happy at the bands exposure and popularity; “We’ve been around since 2009 and yeah we’ve managed to get a fairly decent sized fan base. Our Facebook page has almost 9000 fans worldwide; our first EP went on sale on ITunes and sold well. Our first batch of T-Shirts sold out in less than a week. It amazes me that people in Australia are walking around wearing our T-Shirts, even more that I saw someone wearing one in Lincoln!”

The band certainly has a unique name and Simon revealed just where that name came from and much like his inspiration to start Fleets he was inspired by a band for the name; “The band were named from the song lyrics of one of my favourite bands; The Devil Wears Prada it’s a song called Danger Wildman.”

IKAG most recently played the Walkabout festival and are currently on a hiatus until October. “There were some questions about the future of the band but then I decided to carry it on.” If you listen and think they sound familiar then chances are you heard them on a night out at SCY.  “Mutiny have played our music when they were at SCY and we also played there earlier this summer”.

While most budding musicians would probably want every penny they could get, the band decided to go for a different, more fan friendly approach. They actually took their music off of ITunes and chose to distribute it for free which you can get through a link on their Facebook page. Simon and the rest of IKAG have had a lot requests to take their talents outside of Lincoln and even outside of the country; “We get a lot of requests asking us to go all over the world and hopefully one day we can do it but right now it’s a little out of reach unfortunately but luckily for us Lincoln is definitely in reach”.

So why not give I Know a Ghost a go and maybe if they aren’t your cup of tea give Fleets a go. As we say at Lincolnista, Lincoln will have something for everyone so why not give the band a try at their Facebook page?

Just to be clear about this, Half the band split last july, then then they split again for good last year. They are not still going and haven’t been for over a year. Simon is just trying to use the following they had to promote his own projects (I don’t blame him to be honest) but to pretend they are still together and take all the money the other members should be entitled to? I think that’s VERY wrong.

Probably the worst band I’ve ever listened to. The vocalist is a creep.

There’s a lot of synthesizer stuff out these days, a lot of atoeuuntd voices, and it always kind of bugged me. It’s fun to listen to, but I can’t play this stuff on my guitar really! And it would be refreshing to find some more singers with voices they don’t change up. Like, natural talent. Remember why The Beatles were so awesome? Yeah. Anyway, I’m not cutting down today’s music, just, am I the only one who wishes there was some kind of 100% natural music with actual guitars, drums (that aren’t synthesized rock beats), real pianos, good voices that are actually the true voice of the singer? I actually have a theory that one day there will be like like a musical revolution I guess. Because there isn’t really one thing that sticks out and is the thing of 2011 these days. Like, there was the age of Elvis, and I know Nirvana, Black Sabath, The Who all and don’t forget The Beatles were all the standing out stuff at one point or another. There’s not really a top band or singer for this age. I think Pink, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Bruno Mars all are pretty natural. But I kind of think there’s got to be some musical group coming that will be natural and be the thing of 2011 s musical world’ and set a new trend or something. Sounds stupid, but think about it. Whatdo you think about today’s music? I know my guitar teacher gets really mad about synths!
