Have you got Football Fever?
Sunday, 13th June 2010
I’m sure you’re all aware that the FIFA world cup 2010 began on Friday. England’s first match was on Saturday against the USA which resulted as 1-1, not a great start for us with most people blaming our score on poor goalie Robert Green. As you’re reading this you may think I know a fair bit about football: I don’t. In fact I hate it! I’m not a sports fan at all really, and I think footballers are all overpaid considering what they actually do.
The USA aren’t famous for their great football team, I thought they played soccer anyway? So you would’ve thought that after four years of waiting, England would be raring to go and could thrash the USA easily. But apparently not! It’s not exactly a hopeful start for our country and I highly doubt we’ll be bringing that cup home with us.
It seems the world cup is one of the few times everyone gets a bit patriotic, with their England shirts, face paint and flags hanging out of windows. I think it’s ridiculous really, but hey each to their own. Working at a supermarket yesterday it’s obvious the main things going through my checkout were crates of beer; and when it came to 7 0’clock there was no one to be seen apart from the odd non-supporter grabbing the opportunity of an empty shop. It just amazed me the extent to which a simple game can take over a whole nation!
I know I’m being a typical girl by not showing an interest in sport but it just drives me mad. I wouldn’t dare go near a pub when an England game is on. The Olympics though, now there’s a sporting event I do enjoy because it takes real talent, dedication and a lot of hard work. There’s so much more to admire than some unfaithful overpaid husbands kicking a ball around and getting nowhere! There you go I’ve said my piece, feel free to add yours!
